Augustine was born in Addison (Somerset County), Pennsylvania on January 12, 1843. He was residing in Somerset County when he enlisted on September 19, 1861 at Petersburg, Pennsylvania. Augustine was mustered on November 12, 1861 and served over 4 years. He re-enlisted on February 20, 1864. The entire unit was mustered out on November 22, 1864 and the veterans were transferred to the 188th Pennsylvania Infantry. He was transferred to the new regiment on June 28, 1865 and served until December 14, 1865. He was mustered out at City Point, Virginia.
The 85th Pennsylvania Infantry was organized at Uniontown, Pennsylvania between October 16 and November 12, 1861. The regiment fought in numerous major battles in the eastern theatre. They were assigned to the Sieges of Petersburg and Richmond between June 16 and November 22, 1864. During that time, the regiment fought in the Battle of Deep Bottom Run (VA) between August 13 and August 20, 1864. They unit’s casualty count included 22 killed in action, 56 wounded, and 5 captured or missing in action.
Augustine died on January 19, 1932 at the age of 89 years. He is buried in the Bethel Cemetery in Benedict (York County), Nebraska.
