Austin (also spelled Austen) was born in Andes (Delaware County), New York on April 15, 1839. He enlisted in the regiment on August 16, 1861 at Purvis, New York. He was mustered on August 29, 1861. Private Austin was wounded on May 31, 1862 at the Battle of Fair Oaks in Virginia. The regiment sustained losses of 15 killed and 22 wounded during the battle. Austin was discharged on November 20, 1862 due to his wound.
Austin died on April 25, 1931 at the age of 92 years. He is buried in the Tekamah Cemetery in Tekamah (Burt County), Nebraska.
