Ayers was born in Fulton County, Illinois on July 13, 1845. He was residing in Yates City (Knox County), Illinois when he enlisted in the regiment on March 6, 1864. He was mustered on June 1, 1864 and served about 4 ½ months. He was discharged on October 17, 1864 at Chicago.
The 132nd Illinois Infantry was organized at Camp Fry (Chicago), Illinois for 100 days of service on June 1, 1864. The regiment was assigned to garrison duty in Kentucky.
Ayers died on February 10, 1938 at the age of 92 years. He is buried in the Wilsonville Cemetery in Wilsonville (Furnas County), Nebraska.
