Barrett was born in New Hampshire on July 19, 1835. Barrett’s exact enlistment was not available. One Civil War source indicates that Barrett entered the Union Army in October of 1861as a member of the 2nd Colorado Infantry. He transferred to Company M of the 1st Colorado Cavalry on April 15, 1863. He was discharged on October 31, 1864.
The 1st Colorado Cavalry was organized in November 1, 1862. It was assigned operations against the Indians and protecting stage routes. Detachments of the regiment were assigned to various locations throughout the Colorado Territory.
Barrett died on January 20, 1931 at the age of 95 years. He is buried in the Greenwood Cemetery in Seward (Seward County), Nebraska. Barrett was a member of the Seward Post (#3) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Seward.
