Beach was born in Ohio on August 14, 1840. He was residing in Hillsboro (Henry County), Iowa when he enlisted in the regiment on October 14, 1861. He was mustered on November 2, 1861 and served about 3 years. Beach was promoted to Principal Musician on September 1, 1863. He was discharged on November 16, 1864 at Davenport, Iowa.
The 14th Iowa Infantry was organized and mustered at Davenport, Iowa in November 1861. During Beach’s enlistment, the unit was involved in several major battles. Some of them include:
Capture of Fort Donelson (TN) (February 12-15, 1862).
Battle of Shiloh (TN) (April 6-7, 1862). Casualties were 8 killed, 38 wounded, 51 captured, and 182 were reported missing.
Battle of Corinth (MS) (October 3-4, 1862).
Battle of Pleasant Hill (LA) (April 9, 1864). Casualties were 14 killed, 65 wounded, 20 captured, and 7 missing.
Battle of Tupelo (MS) (July 14-15, 1864).
Beach died on November 22, 1932 at the age of 92 years. He is buried in the Shickley Cemetery in Shickley (Fillmore County), Nebraska. Beach was a member of the Memorial Post (#151) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Shickley.
