Carman was born in Bath (Mason County), Illinois on June 9, 1844. He enlisted in the regiment on March 18, 1863. Carman served about 1 year and 3 months. He was discharged on June 22, 1863.
The 5th Missouri State Militia Cavalry was organized at St Joseph, Missouri in March and April 1862. The unit was assigned to duty in the Central District of Missouri during the Civil War.
Carman died on October 28, 1938 at the age of 94 years. He is buried in the Mt Pleasant Cemetery in Cook (Johnson County), Nebraska. Carman was a member of the Roberts Post (#104) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Talmage, Nebraska.
