Copeland was born on December 26, 1842. He enlisted and was mustered in the regiment on August 19, 1862. Copeland served about 2 years and 11 months. He was discharged on July 5, 1865 at Nashville, Tennessee.
The 69th Indiana Infantry was organized and mustered at Richmond, Indiana on August 19, 1862. During his enlistment, the regiment was involved in several major battles and campaigns. Some of them include:
Assault and capture of Fort Hindman (AK) (January 10-11, 1863).
Battle of Champion’s Hill (MS) (May 16, 1863).
Siege of Vicksburg (MS) (May 18-July 4, 1863).
Red River Campaign (LA) (April 27-May 22, 1864).
Siege of Spanish Fort and Fort Blakely (AL) (April 1-9, 1865).
Copeland died on February 25, 1931 at the age of 88 years. He is buried in the Minden Cemetery in Minden (Kearney County), Nebraska. Copeland was a member of the Strong Post (#91) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Minden.
