Crawford was born in Milton (Chittenden County), Vermont on August 27, 1843. He was residing in Milton when he enlisted in the regiment on September 6, 1862. Crawford was mustered on October 10, 1862 and went to serve about 9 months. He was mustered out on July 21, 1863 at Brattleboro, Vermont.
The 13th Vermont Infantry was organized at Brattleboro, Vermont on October 10, 1862 for 9 months of service. The regiment fought at the Battle of Gettysburg (PA) (July 1-3, 1863). The regimental losses for the entire battle were 11 killed and 91 wounded.
Crawford died on April 10, 1930 at the age of 86 years. He is buried in the Hay Springs Cemetery in Hay Springs (Sheridan County), Nebraska. Crawford was a member of the Sheridan Post (#223) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Rushville, Nebraska.
