Private Cornelius L. Moore
Company D, 176th Ohio Infantry
Moore was born in Ohio on August 24, 1848. He enlisted as a 16-year old private on September 1, 1864. Moore was mustered on September 21, 1864 and served 9 months. He was mustered out on June 14, 1865 at Nashville, Tennessee.
The 176th Ohio Infantry was organized at Camp Chase, Ohio between August 10 and September 21, 1864. The unit was mustered on September 21. The regiment was assigned to the Nashville, Tennessee area and provided provost and guard duty. It participated in the Battle of Nashville (TN) (December 15-16, 1864).
Moore died on August 27, 1938 at the age of 90 years. He is buried in the Hay Springs Cemetery in Hay Springs (Sheridan County), Nebraska. At the time of his death, he was the last member of the Hay Springs Post (#223) of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) in Hay Springs. In addition, he was a member of the Gering Post (#265) of the GAR in Gering, Nebraska.
