Private Walter P. Ostrander
Company E, 42nd Wisconsin Infantry
Ostrander was born in Lockport, New York on September 11, 1841. He was living in Grand Rapids (Wood County), Wisconsin when he enlisted and mustered on August 30, 1864. Ostrander served 10 months with the regiment. He was mustered out on June 20, 1865 at Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
The 42nd Wisconsin Infantry was organized and mustered at Madison on September 7, 1864. The unit was sent ot Cairo, Illinois and was assigned to post and garrison duty.
Ostrander died on June 10, 1932 at the age of 90 years. He is buried in the Big Springs Cemetery in Big Springs (Deuel County), Nebraska. At the time of his death, he was the last member of the Harrison Post (#218) of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) in Chappell, Nebraska. In addition, he was a member of the Keenan Post (#137) of the GAR in Beaver Crossing, Nebraska.
