Gammill was born in Ohio on October 14, 1843. He was residing in Leon (Decatur County), Iowa when he enlisted and was mustered in the regiment on June 1, 1863. He re-enlisted on January 1, 1864 and served about 2 years and 2 months. Gammill was discharged on August 9, 1865 at Atlanta, Georgia.
The 3rd Iowa Cavalry was organized at Keokuk between August 30 and September 14, 1861. During Gammill’s enlistment, the regiment was involved in operations along the Kansas and Missouri border. They fought at the Battle of Westport (October 23, 1864) in the Kansas City area. The unit was sent ot Georgia and was mustered out at Atlanta on August 9, 1865.
Gammill died on June 2, 1931 at the age of 87 years. He is buried in the Prairie Land Cemetery in Cambridge (Frontier County), Nebraska. Gammill was a member of the Cambridge Post (#187) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Cambridge.
