Gerecke (also spelled Garesche) was born in Germany on August 28, 1844. He was living in Hustisford (Dodge County), Wisconsin when he enlisted and was mustered in the 16th Wisconsin Infantry on December 25, 1861. Gerecke was wounded on April 6, 1862 at the Battle of Shiloh. He was discharged from the unit on June 27, 1862.
Gerecke rejoined the Union Army as a member of Company C of the 7th Iowa Cavalry. He was residing in Omaha (Douglas County), Nebraska when he enlisted and was mustered on June 12, 1864. He served 1 year and 5 months. Gerecke was discharged on May 17, 1866 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
He died on June 9, 1936 at the age of 91 years. He is buried in the Prospect Hill Cemetery in Norfolk (Madison County), Nebraska.
