Gurnsey was born in Chemung County, New York on January 22, 1846. He was residing in Virgil (Kane County), Illinois when he enlisted in the regiment on January 1, 1864. Gurnsey was mustered on January 22, 1864 and went on to serve 1 year and 10 months. He was discharged on November 23, 1865 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
The 17th Illinois Cavalry was organized and mustered in St Charles, Illinois in January and February 1864. Company C was assigned to duties in various locations in Missouri. In June 1865 it was sent to Kansas and remained there until November 1865 when it was mustered out.
Gurnsey died on January 15, 1935 at the age of 88 years. He is buried in the Fairview Cemetery in Scottsbluff (Scotts Bluff County), Nebraska. Gurnsey was a member of the Gering Post (#265) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Gering, Nebraska.
