Private Leonidas Griggsby

Company I, 38th Indiana Infantry

Griggsby (also spelled Grigsby) was born in Paoli (Orange County), Indiana on March 16, 1846. He was living in West Baden (Orange County), Indiana when he enlisted and was mustered in the regiment on February 17, 1864. Griggsby served 1 year and 5 months. He was discharged on July 15, 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky.

Griggsby joined the regiment during the final year of the Civil War. The regiment was part of General Sherman’s “War to the Sea” from November 15 through December 10, 1864. He would probably have joined the unit during the Carolina Campaign. In addition, Griggsby would have been a member of the regiment during the Battle of Bentonville (March 19-21, 1865) and would have participated in the Grand Review of the Troops (May 24, 1865) at Washington DC.

He died on December 28, 1932 at the age of 86 years. He is buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Superior (Nuckolls County), Nebraska.
