Goodwin was born on August 4, 1845. He was living in Chicago (Cook County), Illinois when he enlisted in the regiment on January 12, 1864. He was mustered on January 31, 1864 and served about 19 months. Goodwin was discharged on September 4, 1865.
He joined the regiment during the early part of 1864. During his enlistment, the unit was assigned to duties in Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Missouri. The regiment fought at the Battle of Nashville (TN) (December 15-16, 1864) and the Siege of Spanish Fort and Fort Blakely (AL) (March 26-April 8, 1865).
Goodwin died on May 19, 1931 at the age of 85 years. He is buried in the Prospect Hill Cemetery in Elkhorn (Douglas County), Nebraska.
