Grant was born in Muskingum County, Ohio on August 23, 1847. He was residing in Burlington (Des Moines County), Iowa when the 16 year old enlisted and mustered in the regiment on February 4, 1864. Grant served about 2 years. He was discharged on February 15, 1865 at Austin, Texas.
The 1st Iowa Cavalry was organized at Davenport, Iowa in August and September, 1861. The unit was assigned to several southern and central states during the Civil War. Most of its’ duty was in Arkansas. The regiment fought at the Battle of Jenkins’ Ferry (AK) on April 30, 1864.
Grant died on January 31, 1940 at the age of 92 years. He is buried in the Ainsworth Cemetery in Ainsworth (Brown County), Nebraska. Grant was a member of the Ainsworth Post (#171) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Ainsworth.
