Alexander was born in Indiana on August 23, 1848. Based on his date of birth, he was 15 years old when he enlisted in the regiment on May 14, 1864. Alexander was mustered on July 13, 1864. He served a little over 3 months before being discharged on October 21, 1864 at Rock Island, Illinois.
The 48th Iowa Infantry was organized at Davenport on July 13, 1864 for 100 days of service. The regiment guarded prisoners of war at the Rock Island Barracks in Illinois.
Alexander died on November 14, 1938 at the age of 90 years. He is buried in the Parkview Cemetery in Hastings (Adams County), Nebraska. Alexander was a member of the Strickland Post (#13) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Hastings, Nebraska.
