Hewitt was born in Iowa on November 11, 1846. He enlisted and mustered in the regiment on October 24, 1864. Hewitt a little over 9 months and was discharged on August 10, 1865 at New Orleans.
Hewitt joined the regiment in the final stages of the Civil War. During his enlistment, the regiment was involved in Siege of Spanish Fort and Fort Blakely (AL) from March 26 thru April 9, 1865. The unit was relocated to Texas and eventually mustered out at New Orleans on August 10, 1865.
He died on February 15, 1931 at the age of 84 years. Hewitt is buried in the Central City Cemetery in Central City (Merrick County), Nebraska.
