Hill was born in New York on February 27, 1844. He enlisted and mustered in the regiment on September 1, 1864 at Plattsburg, New York. Hill served about 9 months. He was discharged on June 7, 1865 at Raleigh, North Carolina.
The 142nd New York Infantry was organized and mustered at Ogdensburg, New York on September 29, 1862. The unit was assigned to the Siege of Petersburg and Richmond (VA) (June 16, 1864 to December 7, 1864).
Hill died on March 23, 1936 at the age of 92 years. He is buried in the Ohiowa Cemetery in Ohiowa (Fillmore County), Nebraska. Hill was a member of the Wilson Post (#22) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Geneva, Nebraska.
