Hill was born in Beloit (Rock County), Wisconsin on June 26, 1849. He enlisted and mustered in the regiment on August 27, 1864. Hill was 15 years old at the time of his enlistment. He served about 10 months and was discharged on June 24, 1865 at Nashville, Tennessee.
The 43rd Wisconsin Infantry was organized at Madison between August 8 and September 30, 1864. It was moved to Tennessee and performed guard duty on the Nashville & Chattanooga Railroad.
Hill died on August 12, 1934 at the age of 85 years. He is buried in the Minden Cemetery in Minden (Kearney County), Nebraska. Hill was a member of the Strong Post (#91) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Minden.
