Hunkins was born in New Berlin (Waukesha County), Wisconsin on October 17, 1844. He was residing in New Berlin when he enlisted and mustered in the regiment on March 23, 1865. Hunkins served 1 year and was discharged on March 24, 1866.
The 48th Wisconsin Infantry was organized at Milwaukee in February and March 1865. The unit was assigned to Kansas for provost duty and was stationed at Fort Scott.
Hunkins died on March 4, 1947 at the age of 102 years. He is buried in the Leland Cemetery in Beaver Crossing (Seward County), Nebraska.
