Inman was born in Illinois on May 15, 1847. He was residing in Milwaukee when he enlisted and mustered in the regiment on July 20, 1863. He served for 2 years and was discharged on July 14, 1865.
The 1st Wisconsin Heavy Artillery was mustered in November 7, 1863. The unit was sent to New Orleans and attached to the defense of the city until June, 1865. It was sent to Washington DC and was mustered out on August 18, 1865.
Inman died on March 28, 1935 at age of 87 years. Two Civil War sources indicate that he is buried in the Mount Hope Cemetery in Beaver City (Furnas County), Nebraska. Inman was a member of the Freas Post (#163) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Beaver City.
