Johnson was born in LaSalle County, Illinois. An exact date of birth was not available. Illinois enlistment records indicate that he was 18 years old when he enlisted in 1865. He was probably born in 1846. He enlisted and mustered in the regiment on January 17, 1865. Johnson served about 10 months. He was discharged on November 24, 1865 at Vicksburg, Mississippi.

During Johnson’s enlistment, the regiment was involved in several battles and campaigns. Some of them include:

Campaign against Mobile (AL) (March 18-April 12, 1865).

Siege of Spanish Fort and Fort Blakely (AL) (March 26-April 8, 1865).

Occupation of Mobile (AL) (April 12, 1865).

Johnson died on April 12, 1931. He is buried in the Miller Cemetery in Tryon (McPherson County), Nebraska.
