Company A, 46th Illinois Infantry
Miller was born in Marbletown (Ulster County), New York on March 10, 1839. He was residing in Florence (Stephenson County), Illinois when he enlisted on September 10, 1861. Miller was mustered on September 13, 1861 and re-enlisted on January 5, 1864. He served 4 years and 4 months before he was discharged on January 20, 1866 at Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
The 46th Illinois Infantry was organized at Camp Butler (Chicago), Illinois on December 28, 1861. The unit was involved in several major battles and campaigns. Some of them include:
Capture of Fort Donelson (TN) (February 14-16, 1862).
Battle of Shiloh (TN) (April 6-7, 1862). Regimental losses were 31 killed and 9 wounded.
Siege of Vicksburg (MS) (May 18-July 4, 1863).
Siege of Spanish Fort and Fort Blakely (AL) (March 26-April 8, 1865).
Miller died on January 6, 1937 at the age of 97 years. He is buried in the Steele Cemetery in Falls City (Richardson County), Nebraska. Miller was a member of the Veterans Post (#84) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Falls City.
