McAndrew was born in Glasgow, Scotland on February 24, 1845. He was living in Chicago (Cook County), Illinois when he enlisted and mustered in the regiment on February 9, 1865. McAndrew served about 9 months. He was discharged from the unit on October 31, 1865 at Selma, Alabama.
He died on July 2, 1935 at the age of 90 years. He is buried in the East Park Cemetery in Ainsworth (Brown County), Nebraska. McAndrew was a member of the Ainsworth Post (#171) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Ainsworth.
