Martin (also spelled Martyn) was born in Addison County, Vermont on July 26, 1845. He was residing in Waukegan (Lake County), Illinois when he enlisted and mustered in the regiment on September 3, 1864. Martin served 10 months. He was discharged on July 8, 1865 at Springfield, Illinois.
The 146th Illinois Infantry was organized and mustered at Camp Butler, Illinois for 1 year on September 18, 1864. The unit was assigned to Illinois and provided guard duty.
Martin died on April 28, 1933 at the age of 87 years. He is buried in the Columbus Cemetery in Columbus (Platte County), Nebraska. Martin was a member of the Baker Post (#9) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Columbus.
