Pierce (also spelled Purce) was born in Indiana County, Pennsylvania on March 25, 1848. He was residing in Ellison (Warren County), Illinois when he enlisted and mustered in the regiment on March 1, 1865. Pierce was 16 years old at the time of his enlistment. He served about 11 months and was discharged on January 21, 1866 at Selma, Alabama.
He joined the regiment in the final stages of the War. During his enlistment, the unit was assigned to the Siege of Spanish Fort and Fort Blakely (AL) (March 26-April 8, 1865). The 47th Illinois was mustered out on January 21, 1866.
Pierce died on February 29, 1932 at the age of 83 years. He is buried in the L’Eau Qui Court Cemetery in Niobrara (Knox County), Nebraska.
