McKelvey was born on March 27, 1849. He was residing in Jefferson County, Indiana when he enlisted and mustered in the regiment on August 17, 1863. Based on his date of birth and enlistment date, he was 14 years old. McKelvey served about 6 months and was mustered out on March 1, 1863. His last name is spelled “McKelvy” by several Civil War sources.
The 116th Indiana Infantry was organized at Lafayette, Indiana on August 17, 1863 for 6 months. The regiment was assigned to duties in Kentucky and Tennessee. The regimental history indicates that it was assigned to the East Tennessee Campaign during the winter of 1862-63 and “suffered severe privations due to being improperly clothed and short rations”.
McKelvey died on June 8, 1931 at the age of 81 years. He is buried in the Crawford Cemetery in Crawford (Dawes County), Nebraska. At the time of his death, he was the last member of the Robinson Post (#261) of the Grand Army of the Republic.
