Roberts was born in Kentucky on June 4, 1842. He was residing in Franklin (Simpson County), Kentucky when he enlisted and mustered into Colvin’s Light Artillery on September 13, 1862. He served with that unit until March 23, 1865 when he transferred the 1st Illinois Light Artillery. Roberts served about 3 additional months before he was discharged on June 19, 1865.
Roberts died on June 29, 1930 at the age of 88 years. He is buried in the Greenwood Cemetery in Lexington (Dawson County), Nebraska. Roberts was a member of the Reno Post (#112) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Lexington.
