Company F, 72nd Ohio Infantry

Russell was born in Ohio on February 2, 1841. He enlisted as a corporal on October 28, 1861 and was mustered on January 10, 1862. Russell served 3 years and 8 months. He was discharged on September 11, 1865 at Vicksburg, Mississippi. Russell was promoted to first sergeant on July 5, 1865.

The 72nd Ohio Infantry was organized at Fremont, Ohio between October 1861 and February 1862. During Russell’s enlistment, the regiment was involved in several major battles and campaigns. Some of them include:

Battle of Shiloh (MS) (April 6-7, 1862). Regimental losses were 17 killed, 66 wounded, 9 captured, and 1 reported missing in 2 days of fighting.

Siege of Vicksburg (MS) (May 18-July 4, 1863).

Siege of Jackson (MS) (July 10-17, 1863).

Battle of Brice’s Cross Roads (MS) (June 11-12, 1864). Regimental losses were 2 killed, 2 wounded, and 240 were captured during 2 days of fighting near Ripley, Mississippi.

Battle of Nashville (TN) (December 15-16, 1864).

Siege of Spanish Fort and Fort Blakely (AL) (March 26-April 8, 1865).

Russell died on June 4, 1932 at the age of 91 years. He is buried in the Ashland Cemetery in Ashland (Saunders County), Nebraska. Russell was a member of the McCook Post (#31) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Ashland.
