Private John F Schmalzreid
16th Indiana Light Artillery
Schmalzreid was born in Germany on November 16, 1841. He enlisted and mustered in the regiment on March 11, 1862. Schmalzreid served over 3 years before he was discharged on July 5, 1865 at Indianapolis.
The 16th Indiana Light Artillery was organized and mustered at Indianapolis on March 24, 1862. The unit was assigned to defensive duties at Washington DC until June 1865. It played a role in the repulse of General Early’s attack on Washington on July 11-12, 1864.
Schmalzreid died on September 22, 1936 at the age of 94 years. He is buried in the North Platte Cemetery in North Platte (Lincoln County), Nebraska. Schmalzreid was a member of the Douglas Post (#69) of the Grand Army of the Republic in North Platte.
