Schmidt was born in Germany on February 3, 1846. He was residing in Clayton County, Iowa when he enlisted in the 27th Iowa Infantry on February 3, 1864. Schmidt was mustered on February 22, 1864 and served until July 15, 1865. On that date, he transferred to the 12th Iowa Infantry. One source indicates that he served until January 20, 1866 when the unit was mustered out of the Union Army.
The 27th Iowa Infantry was organized and mustered at Dubuque on October 3, 1862. The regiment was assigned to duty in several southern states during the Civil War. On April 9, 1864 the unit fought at the Battle of Pleasant Hill in Louisiana. Regimental losses were 5 killed, 76 wounded, and 23 were captured.
Schmidt died on July 4, 1941 at the age of 95 years. He is buried in the Wyuka Cemetery in Lincoln (Lancaster County), Nebraska. Schmidt was a member of the Farragut Post (#25) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Lincoln.
