Schofield was born in New York City on January 5, 1847. He was residing in Lake County, Indiana when he enlisted in the regiment on August 16, 1862. Schofield was mustered on October 23, 1863 and served until July 1, 1865 when he transferred to the 29th Indiana Infantry. He served an additional 5 months with the second unit and was discharged on December 2, 1865 at Marietta, Georgia.
The 73rd Indiana Infantry was organized and mustered at South Bend on August 16, 1862. The unit fought at the Battle of Stone’s River in Tennessee in late December 1862 and early January 1863. The regiment lost 26 soldiers and 6 were wounded during the 5-day battle.
Schofield died on February 15, 1931 at the age of 83 years. He is buried in the Sheridan Cemetery in Auburn (Nemaha County), Nebraska.
