Scritsmier (also spelled Schritsmeir) was born in Denmark on April 2, 1844. He was residing in Vinland (Winnebago County), Wisconsin when he enlisted and mustered in the regiment on August 11, 1863. Scritsmier served over 2 years and was discharged on September 21, 1865 at Washington DC.
The 1st Wisconsin Heavy Artillery was mustered on November 7, 1863. The unit was sent to New Orleans and attached to the defense of the city until June 1865. It was sent to Washington DC and mustered out on August 18, 1865.
Scritsmier died on May23, 1933 at the age of 89 years. He is buried in the Gates Cemetery in Gates (Custer County), Nebraska. Scritsmier was a member of the Washburn Post (#98) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Broken Bow, Nebraska.
