Scrivner was born in Irvine (Estill County), Kentucky on July 4, 1841. He enlisted in the regiment on October 23, 1861 at Lebanon, Kentucky. Scrivner was mustered on January 15, 1862. His discharge date was not available. The regiment was mustered out in February 1865 and probability exists that he was discharged at that time.
The 8th Kentucky Infantry was organized at Estill Springs and Lebanon, Kentucky in October 1861. During his enlistment, the unit fought in several major battles. Some of them include:
Battle of Perryville (KY) (October 8, 1862).
Battle of Stone’s River (TN) (December 30-31, 1862-January 1-3, 1863). Regimental losses were 10 killed and 4 wounded in 3 days of fighting.
Battle of Chickamauga (GA) (September 19-20, 1863). Regimental losses were 3 killed, 3 wounded, and 8 captured.
Scrivner died on February 16, 1947 at the age of 105 years. He is buried in the Red Cloud Cemetery in Red Cloud (Webster County), Nebraska.
