Searle (also spelled Searles) was born in Allegany (Cattaraugus County), New York on January 1, 1838. He enlisted and mustered in the regiment on May 27, 1864. Searle served until September 21, 1864 when he was discharged at Indianapolis.
The 138th Indiana Infantry was organized and mustered at Indianapolis on May 27, 1864. The regiment was assigned to railroad guard duty in Tennessee and Alabama.
Searle died on December 22, 1930 at the age of 92 years. He is buried in the Ogallala Cemetery in Ogallala (Keith County), Nebraska.
