Shade was born in Perry County, Pennsylvania on February 22, 1844. He was residing in Logan (Peoria County), Illinois when he enlisted and mustered in the regiment on February 24, 1865. Shade enlisted for 1 year as a corporal. He served a little over 4 months before he was discharged on July 9, 1865.
Shade died on February 16, 1931 at the age of 86 years. He is buried in the Geneva Cemetery in Geneva (Fillmore County), Nebraska. Shade was a member of two (2) posts of the Grand Army of the Republic in Alexandria, Nebraska:
Thayer Post (#162). The Post existed from 1883 through 1885.
Howard Post (#271). The Post existed from 1888 through 1892.
