Private Abram Sutherland

Sutherland was born in Indiana on September 24, 1840. He was residing in Bartholomew County, Indiana when he enlisted and mustered in the regiment on August 15, 1861. Indiana records do not reflect the date of Sutherland’s discharge from the unit. One source (Sons of the Union Veterans) indicates that he was discharged on July 24, 1865.
The 22nd Indiana Infantry was organized and mustered at Indianapolis on August 15, 1861. During Sutherland’s enlistment, the regiment was involved in many major battles and military operations. A partial list includes:

Sutherland died on June 16, 1931 at the age of 90 years. He is buried in the Blair Cemetery in Blair (Washington County), Nebraska. Sutherland was a member of the Dix Post (#52) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Blair.
