Stewart was born in Ohio on September 2, 1847. He was residing in Mason County, Illinois when he enlisted in the regiment on February 8, 1864. Stewart was mustered on April 8, 1864. He served about 1 year and 7 months and was discharged November 24, 1865 at Vicksburg, Mississippi.
During Stewart’s enlistment, the regiment was involved in several battles and campaigns. Some of them include:
Campaign against Mobile (AL) (March 18-April 12, 1865).
Siege of Spanish Fort and Fort Blakely (AL) (March 26-April 8, 1865).
Occupation of Mobile (AL) (April 12, 1865).
Stewart died on August 28, 1933 at the age of 85 years. He is buried in the Dorchester Cemetery in Dorchester (Saline County), Nebraska. Stewart was a member of the Coates Post (#107) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Dorchester.
