Smith was born in Plainfield (Hendricks County), Indiana on March 8, 1842. He enlisted and was mustered in the regiment on November 1, 1863 at St Louis. The discharge date for Smith was not available.
The 12th Missouri Cavalry was organized at St Louis between November 3, 1863 and March 23, 1864. The unit fought at the Battle of Nashville (TN) (December 15-16, 1864) and was assigned to the frontier duty until it was discharged on April 9, 1866.
Smith died on July 5, 1932 at the age of 90 years. He is buried in the Blair Cemetery in Blair (Washington County), Nebraska. Smith was a member of the Dix Post (#52) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Blair.
