Smith was born in Erie County, Pennsylvania on March 26, 1843. He was residing in Kekoskee (Dodge County), Wisconsin when he enlisted and mustered in the regiment on September 30, 1861. Smith served over 3 years before he was discharged on November 3, 1864.
The 10th Wisconsin Infantry was organized and mustered at Milwaukee on October 14, 1861. During his enlistment, the unit was involved in many major battles and campaigns. A partial list includes:
Battle of Perryville (KY) (October 8, 1862). Regimental losses were 37 killed, 112 wounded, and 3 were reported missing.
Battle of Stone’s River (TN) (December 30-31, 1862 – January 1-3, 1863).
Battle of Chickamauga (GA) (September 19-21, 1863). Regimental losses were 17 killed, 54 wounded, 145 were captured, and 7 were reported missing.
Battle of Peach Tree Creek (GA) (July 19-20, 1864).
Smith died on June 22, 1930 at the age of 87 years. He is buried in the Red Cloud Cemetery in Red Cloud (Webster County), Nebraska. Smith was a member of the Garfield Post (#80) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Red Cloud.
