Templeton was born in Worcester (Washington County), Vermont on December 18, 1843. He was residing in Worcester when he enlisted in the 13th Vermont Infantry on August 29, 1862. Templeton was mustered on October 10, 1862 and served about 9 months. He was discharged on July 21, 1863. He re-enlisted as a member of the 6th Vermont Infantry on September 19, 1864 and served another 9 months. He was discharged on June 19, 1865.
He died on October 25, 1936 at the age of 92 years. He is buried in the Sunrise Cemetery in Wahoo (Saunders County), Nebraska. Templeton was a member of two (2) posts of the Grand Army of the Republic:
Farragut Post (#25) in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Andrew Post (#90) in Wahoo, Nebraska.
