Private Abner Towle
Company H, 1st Wisconsin Heavy Artillery
Towle was born in Maine on June 29, 1843. He was residing in Waterloo (Jefferson County), Wisconsin when he enlisted and mustered in the regiment on September 5, 1864. Towle served about 10 months. He was discharged on June 26, 1865.
The 1st Wisconsin Heavy Artillery was mustered in November 7, 1863. The unit was sent to New Orleans and attached to the defense of the city until June, 1865. It was sent to Washington DC and was mustered out on August 18, 1865.
Towle died on August 7, 1936 at the age of 93 years. He is buried in the Kilfoil Cemetery in Merna (Custer County), Nebraska. Towle was a member of the Rice Post (#256) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Merna.
