Van Patten was born in New Jersey on November 15, 1841. He was residing in Peoria (Peoria County), Illinois when he enlisted and mustered in the regiment on February 9, 1865. Van Patten served nearly 1 year before he was discharged on January 24, 186 at Columbus, Georgia.
The 151st Illinois Infantry was organized and mustered for 1 year on February 23, 1865 at Quincy, Illinois. It was assigned to duty in Georgia until it was mustered out in January 1866.
Van Patten died on October 28, 1930 at the age of 88 years. He is buried in the Sutton Cemetery in Sutton (Clay County), Nebraska. VanPatten was a member of the Meade Post (#19) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Sutton.
