Battery A, 1st Michigan Light Artillery
West was born in Ohio on June 30, 1845. He enlisted in the regiment on February 2, 1864 at Quincy, Michigan. West was mustered on February 11, 1864 and a little over 17 months. He was discharged on July 28, 1865 at Jackson, Michigan.
He joined the regiment during the final stages of the War. During his enlistment, the unit was assigned to the Battle of Chattanooga (TN) (November 23-25, 1864) and remained at that location until in was mustered out in July of 1865.
West died on March 15, 1934 at the age of 88 years. He is buried in the Bellwood Cemetery in Bellwood (Butler County), Nebraska. West was a member of two Nebraska Grand Army of the Republic Posts: Stanton Post (#20) in Rising City, Nebraska and the Brown Post (#83) in Exeter, Nebraska.
