Wilson was born in Oswego (Oswego County), New York on May 23, 1843. He was residing in Dixon (Scott County), Iowa when he enlisted on August 1, 1862. Wilson was mustered on August 22, 1862 and served nearly 3 years. He was discharged on July 8, 1865 at Mobile, Alabama.
The 20th Iowa Infantry was organized and mustered at Clinton, Iowa on August 25, 1862. During his enlistment, the unit fought in several major battles and military operations. Some of them include:
Battle of Prairie Grove (AK) (December 7, 1862).
Siege of Vicksburg (MS) (June 14-July 4, 1863).
Siege of Fort Morgan (AL) (August 9-23, 1864).
Assault and capture of Fort Blakely (AL) (April 9, 1865).
Wilson died on May 17, 1933 at the age of 89 years. He is buried in the Hendley Cemetery in Hendley (Furnas County), Nebraska.
