Gibson was born in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania on August 7, 1845. He enlisted and was mustered as a substitute on April 1, 1865. Some Civil War sources spell his first name “Wylie”. Gibson served about 4 months and was mustered out on July 24, 1865.
Gibson died on January 1, 1936 at the age of 90 years. He is buried in the Riverside Cemetery in Gibbon (Buffalo County), Nebraska. At the time of his death, he was the last member of the Warren Post (#113) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Gibbon.
