Private Ami Sperry
Company I, 2nd Wisconsin Cavalry
Sperry was born in Platteview (Grant County), Wisconsin on November 15, 1846. There is some question regarding Sperry’s date-of-birth. Two Civil War sources reflect the 1846 date. His headstone indicates that he was born on November 15, 1848. Based on his date of enlistment (October 22, 1863) it would appear that the 1846 is probably correct. He would have been 16 years old when he enlisted.
Sperry enlisted and was mustered on October 22, 1863. He served nearly 2 years before being mustered out on November 15, 1865 at Austin, Texas. The 2nd Wisconsin Cavalry saw duty in several southern states.
He died on May 26, 1933 at the age of 86 years based on his 1846 date-of-birth. Sperry is buried in the Cedar Lawn Cemetery in Gresham (York County), Nebraska. At the time of his death, he was the last member of the Stephenson Post (#132) of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) in Gresham. In addition, he was a member of the Farnsworth Post (#73) of the GAR in Ulysses, Nebraska.
