Private Jefferson Gregg
Company E, 4th Missouri State Militia Cavalry
Gregg was born in Grant City (Henry County), Indiana on November 1, 1846. He enlisted in the regiment on March 1, 1862. He served 3 years before being mustered out on February 28, 1865. Some Civil War sources spell his last name “Griggs”.
The 4th Missouri State Militia Cavalry was organized at St Joseph, Missouri from January 28 to May 14, 1862. During Gregg’s enlistment the unit spent most the War in Missouri. They fought at the Battle of Westport on October 23, 1864.
Gregg died on October 30, 1930 at the age of 85 years. He is buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Loup City (Sherman County), Nebraska. At the time of his death, he was the last member of the Shiloh Post (#124) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Loup City.
