Sprout was born in Dupage County, Illinois on August 24, 1846. The 17-year old enlisted on May 11, 1864 and was mustered in the unit on June 16, 1864. He served 4 months and was mustered out on October 10, 1864 at Chicago.
The 141st Illinois Infantry was organized and mustered at Elgin, Illinois on June 16, 1864 for 100 days. It was sent to Kentucky and garrison duty in that area until October.
Sprout died on September 24, 1937 at the age of 91 years. He is buried in the Geneva Cemetery in Geneva (Fillmore County), Nebraska. At the time of his death, he was the last member of the Franklin Post (#136) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Franklin.
